Great Organizations That Promote Literacy
We wanted to highlight some great organizations that are working to promote literacy:
Read With Malcolm and Share the Magic Foundation, both founded by New England Patriot wide receiver, Malcolm Mitchell, share a common goal of transforming the lives of young readers in underserved communities through literacy and to “introduce book ownership to students in households where reading is not a priority.” Through his Reading Rallies and school visits held in locations throughout the country, Malcolm personally shares his message with students that “reading is a necessary skill to compete effectively in life and fulfill an individual’s potential and pursuit of their dreams.”
Imagination Library was founded by Dolly Parton in 1995 to benefit the children of her home county in Eastern Tennessee. Dolly’s aim was to promote a love of reading in the county’s preschool-aged children and to inspire the children to “Dream More, Learn More, Care More and Be More”. Each month, the Imagination Library mails an age-appropriate book to all children registered in the program, at no cost to the child’s family. Since its first year, Dolly’s program has expanded throughout the United Sates and to Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia. In March 2018, the United States Library of Congress helped the Imagination Library celebrate the donation of its 100-millionth free book with a live reading by Dolly Parton of her children’s picture book “Coat of Many Colors”.
