We aren’t the only ones trying to tackle the achievement gap in young children. Here are a few examples of what other organizations are doing around the country:
Chicago – The Thirty Million Words Initiative, a “parent-directed program designed to harness the power of language to build a child’s brain and impact his or her future. This innovative project was founded by Dana Suskind, M.D., pediatric neurologist and author of the “Thirty Million Word Gap”. – http://thirtymillionwords.org/
Georgia – a statewide cross-sector initiative, “Talk With Me Baby”, attempts to engage parents to become conversation partners with their children in order to increase their early language exposure. – http://www.talkwithmebaby.org/
Providence – a municipal pilot program, “Providence Talks”, helps 75 Rhode Island families quantify the number of words their child hears. PT then helps empower parents and caretakers with the tools they need to ensure their child enters school ready to succeed. A winner of 2012-2013 Mayor’s Challenge, PT was awarded a $5 million grant by Bloomberg Philanthropies. – http://www.providencetalks.org/
Worcester – a city-wide coalition, “Worcester Reads”, grew out of the national “Campaign for Grade Level Reading”, and encourages parents and children to read 20 minutes a day, every day. – http://www.worcesterreads.org/
